I refer to the article ‘Marsascala’s new €50K bollards bite the dust’ (December 2).

Speed cameras are installed only when no other traffic-calming or speed management measure can be implemented. Speed cameras are usually implemented in arterial and distributor roads. Also, speed cameras only address issues pertaining to overspeeding. In this case, Triq il-Qaliet, in Marsascala, also has the problem of overtaking. The ‘bollards proposal’ in Marsascala reached its scope.

It was very effective in ensuring that illegal overtaking is prohibited and that overspeeding is controlled. The proposal, which also included road markings, was sent to the local council, which agreed with the measure. The implementation of the works involved were shared between Transport Malta and the council.

The local council and Transport Malta have discussed and agreed on increasing the safety measures in this road through the installation of raised pedestrian crossings, which will include bollards on their approaches.

Editorial note: The Times of Malta contacted Transport Malta for comments prior to the publication of the article in question and the regulator “gave the prerogative to the local council, since it is their project”.
