A magistrate has ordered that €100 confiscated from the sale of a few grams of cannabis resin in Paceville, be donated to the Ursuline Sisters Crèche of Sliema.

Abdi Ali Mahammed, 19, from Somalia who lives in Gzira, was arraigned this morning under arrest before Magistrate Gabriella Vella, accused of trafficking seven grams of cannabis two days ago.

The court heard how the man had sold the drug for €140 but had already spent €40 at various entertainment clubs, before being arrested by the police. The remaining €100 were confiscated.

The man initially denied the charges, but when asked for the second time he changed his plea after his lawyer explained to him the legal repercussions of his decision.

He was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment and fined €600. The court took in consideration the fact that the accused had collaborated with the police to the point that another man had been detained.

Another Somali man, Abdikadir Hashi Said, 22, also from Gzira, was arraigned over this case later in the afternoon was denied bail, after pleading not guilty.

Lawyer Yanika Bugeja was legal aid, while Inspector Jonathan Ransley prosecuted.
