Parliament will be debating an Opposition motion on controversial legal notices exempting development on hospital grounds from the need for an environmental impact assessment and a development permit in February.

The government told the House Business Committee this evening that the notices will not be applied prior to the conclusion of the parliamentary debate.

The notices were issued on the eve of the feast of Sta Marija.

A European Commission spokeswoman had told the Times of Malta that an automatic exemption of developments on hospital grounds from an environmental impact assessment was “not in line” with EU legislation.

The committee agreed that Parliament will rise for the Christmas recess on December 16 and will reconvene on January 12.
