The Eiffel Tower lit up with messages of hope and was transformed into a virtual forest last night on the eve of the international climate change summit hosted by France.

The light installation, created by artist Naziha Mestaoui, called for a shift to 100 percent renewable energy and the protection of the world's forests.

Using 3D mapping techniques, it offered supporters the chance to donate to reforestation projects in the Amazon rainforest and transform the Eiffel Tower into a virtual forest of trees.

The project entitled "One heart one tree" aimed to engage citizens and help push for an ambitious agreement at the upcoming climate change negotiations.

The installation will run until December 4 during the World Climate Change Conference (COP21) which opens today in the French capital and will be attended by more than 140 world leaders.
