J-League: Defending champions Gamba Osaka beat Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1 in a dramatic J-League championship semi-final yesterday, scoring twice at the end of extra time moments after almost conceding a calamitous own goal. Gamba now take on 2012 and 2013 champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima for the title and will host the first leg on Wednesday before the second match next weekend at the Big Arch Stadium.

Banned: Ukraine have been ordered to play their next home game in UEFA competition behind closed doors following racist behaviour, the use of laser pointers, illicit banners and chants at the Euro 2016 qualifier against Spain on Oct. 12. The Football Federation of Ukraine was also fined 97,000 euros ($102,752.10) in total for the use of laser devices, illicit banners, chants and blocking of stairways.

Byrne: Former England defender Gerry Byrne, who won two league titles with Liverpool and played with a broken collarbone when they won the FA Cup for the first time in 1965, has died aged 77, the club announced yesterday. Byrne made 333 appearances for Liverpool who won the league title in 1964 and 1966 and he also gained an FA Cup winners’ medal in 1965 when Liverpool beat Leeds United 2-1.

Tiago: Veteran Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago broke his right leg during yesterday’s 1-0 home win over Espanyol in La Liga. “He suffered a non-displaced fracture to the middle third of the tibia,” second-placed Atletico said in a statement. Tiago, 34, was carried off in the first half after attempting to tackle Espanyol’s Marco Asensio and taken straight to hospital.

Saunders: Chesterfield have sacked manager Dean Saunders after yesterday’s 4-0 home defeat to Swindon. Saunders, who took over from Paul Cook in May, leaves the Spireites 15th in Sky Bet League One, with the reverse to Swindon a fourth in a row. His assistant Brian Carey has also left the club.
