Maltese experimental electronic musician and composer Renzo Spiteri presents his new solo work Quintessence in a series of performances in Europe that start now and continue until April.

The first performance was held at Gallus Theatre in Frankfurt as part of the Cultural Days of the European Central Bank. This will be followed by performances, supported by the Cultural Export Fund, in Uden (The Netherlands) as part of the PNEM Sound Art Festival 2015, Axis Arts Centre in Crewe (England), Crescent Arts Centre in Belfast (Northern Ireland)  and at the LSO St Luke’s in London (UK).

Premiered at The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, in partnership with Future Everything Festival 2015, Quintessence is best described as an immersive experience that wraps the audience in an alluring world of sound, created through the use of sampling and live electronic manipulation, a large suspended metal sheet, a fishing line, vocal phrases and a sculptural array of acoustic instruments.

“Quintessence is a manifestation of my passion for sound and how it can be expressed within a defined space,” Spiteri said. “In creating Quintessence I wanted to draw on my performance experience, the sounds of countries travelled to and my ongoing research in sound, to present a work that is a combination of complex sound layers, a powerful narrative and an array of emotions.”

Quintessence traces its roots to an artistic collaboration with the Royal Conservatoire of Music of The Hague, The Netherlands, in September 2012 with part of the creative sessions resulting in the vocal phrases, featured in Quintessence by Leah Uijterlinde and Egle Petrosiute, both former students at the Conservatoire.

Audiences in Malta will have the opportunity to experience Quintessence between January 29 and 31 when it will be presented at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta.
