Opposition leader Simon Busuttil left Malta for Vancouver today where he is addressing a conference on the fight against diabetes.

The conference is organised by the Parliamentarians for Diabetes Global Network which brings together parliamentarians from around the world who are active in this fight. Dr Busuttil is vice-president of the network.

Some 32 million people in Europe suffer from diabetes while millions more have the disease without knowing. A person in the EU dies from the disease ever two minutes. In Malta it is estimated that 10 per cent of the population suffers from the disease.

The Maltese delegation also includes Nationalist MP Clyde Puli and the Labour Party’s whip Godfrey Farrugia, who is the chairman of the diabetes working group.
