Cricket: The ICC has appointed four female match officials for the first time ahead of the women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier in Bangkok, which starts on Saturday. Former England left-arm spinner Sue Redfern is one of the quartet, alongside New Zealander Kathleen Cross, Australia’s Claire Polosak and the West Indies’ Jacqueline Williams.

Boxing: The dispute over the gloves to be used in Saturday’s world heavyweight title fight between Ukrainian holder Wladimir Klitschko and Britain’s Tyson Fury will be resolved before tomorrow’s rules meeting, officials said. Klitschko, unbeaten for 11 years and a hot favourite to retain his belts in Duesseldorf, has the right to choose the gloves for both fighters but Fury’s camp had protested that the ones sent to him were unsuitable, and hurt his thumb.

Snooker: John Higgins (picture) eased into the UK Championship second round with a 6-1 victory over Leo Fernandez, after a crowd member being treated for a seizure delayed play. Spectators and both players initially thought the audience member had fallen asleep, before realising the situation was not so light-hearted. A World Snooker spokesman confirmed a member of the crowd had suffered a seizure, but received treatment and made a full recovery.

Athletics: The Kenyan government yesterday called for top officials in its athletics federation to step down after athletes stormed Athletics Kenya (AK) headquarters in Nairobi in protest over corruption and feeble efforts to tackle doping. AK officials have denied embezzling funds relating to a sponsorship deal with Nike. A group of athletes swooped on the AK headquarters on Monday, ordering staff to leave and barricading themselves inside until Tuesday evening. The stand-off ended after athletes met with government officials.

Cricket: A proposal to abolish the pre-match toss deciding which team bats first will be discussed at a meeting of the England and Wales Cricket Board today. But contrary to reports, an ECB source told Reuters that the away team captain would only be given the opportunity to bowl first, not bat first. If they did not want to bowl, the toss would take place as normal. The move would, however, end a tradition that dates back to the first laws of the sport, drawn up in the 1740s.

Basket, NBA: Golden State Warriors registered the best start in NBA history with their 16th straight victory in a blowout win over the visiting Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night at Oracle Arena. The outcome of the game was never really in doubt after the Warriors raced out to a 19-point lead at the end of the first quarter, ultimately cruising to a 111-77 win. The Warriors’ historic win broke the previous record of 15-0 starts held by the 1948-49 Washington Capitols and 1993-94 Houston Rockets.
