With two teams – Chaudron and RG87 – on equal points leading the 2015 UIM ClassOne World Championship standings, a most aggressive grand finale was expected at the third and last meeting of the season, held recently in Abu Dhabi.

Yet, this was not to be for in the second out of six laps Chaudron developed engine problems and, against all expectations, the Maltese team had to retire from the race as the damage could not be repaired.

Was it a case that could have been avoided?

“Sometimes certain mishaps could be avoided but in racing, like in all other sports, anything could happen from small setbacks to unfortunate and unpleasant surprises that cause major and serious damage like what happened to us in Abu Dhabi,” four-times world champion and Chaudron driver Aaron Ciantar said.

The 2015 UIM ClassOne World Championship was made up of three race meetings this season – Venezia-Rimini, Salerno and Abu Dhabi.

When a racing team encounter technical problems and are compelled to abandon one of the races in the season it is very difficult for them to regain the lost points with the series so short.

One satisfying aspect, even in such a disappointing finale, was that in Race One Ciantar’s Chaudron had registered the best average speed of the week.

In fact, the best recorded three average speeds in the V1 Class belonged to Team Chaudron – 79.69mph, Team RG87 (Italy) – 72.97mph, and Team 47 Silverline (England) – 69.48mph.

Team Chaudron, once again, had the powerful pair of professionals in the cockpit in Abu Dhabi – Ciantar retained his traditional role as driver with Frenchman Dominique Martini featuring as the throttleman.

At the end of the Abu Dhabi meeting, the new world cham-pions were confirmed.

In C1 Class, the title winners were Team 6 Abu Dhabi (UAE, Gary Ballough/Jerry Tomlinson) with 71 points.

Team 3 Victory (UAE) and Team 10 T-Bone Station (Italy) were joint second with 57 points.

In V1, the champions are Team 81 RG87 (Italy, Giuseppe Schiano/ Antonio Schiano) with 71 points.

Team 4 Bernico-New Star (Russia) were the runners-up, 53 points, and Team 55 Chaudron (Malta) third, 35 points.

Despite the Abu Dhabi upset, the season was a most gratifying one for the Chaudron factory from a boat-building aspect.

In fact, the Maltese company won the trust of Fabrizio Giugiaro.

The renowned Italian commissioned a 45-footer built specifically to the explicit lust of its distinguished owner whose name is partially incorporated in the model’s name – Chaudron 45G Edition.

The new boat will be making its baptism of fire next year racing in the Venezia-Montecarlo race.

Ciantar will be in the cockpit for the 1,500-mile race with Giugiaro as navigator.

Team Chaudron will also compete in the V1 Class of the UIM ClassOne Worlds next year looking to regain the championship title from Italy’s Team 81 RG87.
