A team of Maltese players have just taken part in the Italian Grand Master Open which was held in Bologna and sanctioned by the World Darts Federation (WDF).

Day One of the competition was reserved for doubles.

The Maltese pairs had a very good tournament, particularly John Agius and Tony Borg who went all the way to reach the final.

However, their chances of re-turning home with the title were dashed when they were beaten 5-3 in the gold medal match.

On their way to reaching the final, Agius and Borg eliminated the father and son combination of Brian and Owlyn Abela.

The Maltese players fared even better on Day Two when the singles events were played.

In fact, the final was contested by Norbert Attard and Godfrey Abela with the former emerging winner 6-3.

Both players had to figure in seven rounds before booking their place in the title showdown.

A few of those who fell by the wayside in the process were players who enjoy a better ranking that Attard and Abela.

Thanks to his success in Bologna, Attard sealed automatic qualification for the BDO Winmau Masters 2016 – one of the major tournaments on the world darts calendar.
