A new fish market was inaugurated in Marsa today following a €4 million investment by the government.

The new facility was opened by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who said it would yield ‘higher standards, more traceability and a better service.”

The new facility replaces the old fish market in Grand harbour, which was used for over a century and may now be turned into a boutique hotel.

The fish market project was started by the former government and Dr Muscat said that had it been possible, the present government would have sited it elsewhere, by the sea, and not inland, as had happened.

A landing facility has however been allocated for fishing boats in Marsa Creek.

The new fish market will start being used on Monday.

Those present for the inauguration included Roderick Galdes, Parliamentary Secretary responsible for fisheries.
