Danilo Doncic has agreed a deal to take charge of Cypriot top-flight club Ethnikos Achnas.

As reported by Times of Malta, Ethnikos had identified Doncic as one of the top candidates for their vacant coaching position and further discussions yesterday led to a verbal agreement.

Doncic, who had also been sounded out by St Andrew’s officials over the possibility of replacing Wayne Attard, travelled to Cyprus yesterday morning after being offered the job by Ethnikos.

The Serbian mentor, who has been out of work since parting with Bahrain’s Al Najma at the end of last season, is expected to sign the contract with Ethnikos today after taking charge of his first training session yesterday.

Doncic, a former striker known for his scoring exploits with Valletta and Sliema Wanderers, has coached San Ġwann, Floriana, Sliema Wanderers and Mosta after hanging up his boots.

Apart from his spell with Al Najma, Doncic also served as assistant coach with Lokomotiv Sofia and Kavala in Greece.

Doncic must hit the ground running at Ethnikos as his new team are fighting against relegation.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, Doncic will make his debut on the Ethnikos bench in their relegation showdown with AEL Limassol on Sunday.

The two troubled teams are second from bottom, level on eight points.

Meanwhile, St Andrew’s have put assistant coach Jose Borg in temporary charge of first-team affairs until the club appoint a new coach.
