Matthew Calleja Cremona fractured his jaw during Sunday’s Premier League match against Mosta and the injury could keep the Floriana goalkeeper out of the game for the next four weeks.

Calleja Cremona suffered the injury very late in the match when he collided with an opponent in attempt to intercept a cross inside his box.

Floriana won the match 1-0 to move up the standings but will have to sustain their momentum without Calleja Cremona who will have surgery on Friday. His absence is a huge blow for the Greens who beat Mosta 1-0 on Sunday.

Luis Oliveira’s team hit top form lately as three wins from four matches saw them move up to fourth place in the standings on 23 points, just two points behind joint leaders Valletta and Hibs.

The Malta U-21 goalkeeper, formerly of Pembroke, has been an inspirational figure for the Greens this season, conceding just one goal from the last four outings.

“It’s very disappointing when these things happen but that’s football,” Calleja Cremona told Times of Malta yesterday.

“I want to make a full recovery from this setback. On Friday, I will have surgery and then start my rehabilitation programme without delay.

“It’s still early to say when I will be back but they told me these injuries normally take four weeks to heal which means that I should be back some time around the start of the New Year.”

Tyrone Gauci is expected to fill the void left by Calleja Cremona, starting with a tough-looking match against champions Hibernians at the National Stadium, today week.

Floriana are also due to play Qormi, Naxxar Lions and St Andrew’s before the Christmas recess.

Elsewhere, Balzan’s Bojan Kal-jevic is currently in Germany to continue with his long-term rehabilitation following ankle surgery.

The Montenegro striker has not played in the league this season as he steps up his recovery.

Earlier this week, Kaljevic flew to Germany where he is receiving treatment at a top-notch clinic belonging to Bundesliga cham-pions Bayern Munich.

Ryan Fenech is another Balzan player working his way back to full fitness as he continues to recover from hernia operation.

The 29-year-old is expected to start running with his team-mates today and expected to increase his workload gradually before making himself available for coach Oliver Spiteri.

Balzan are hopeful Fenech returns to action in January.

That would provide Spiteri with a major boost as Balzan look to improve on last season’s fourth-place finish in the league.
