Snow storm: A single effort on target which was provided by the opposition was enough to give Hertha Berlin a 1-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Hoffenheim in a Bundesliga match played in a driving snowstorm yesterday. There was not a flake in sight at kickoff but conditions changed dramatically as heavy snow began to fall at the Olympiastadion. Within minutes the markings on the pitch had disappeared, players were slithering around the field and the white ball was exchanged for an orange one.

In Scotland: Hamilton wore France strips in their 1-1 Premiership draw against Aberdeen as a tribute to the Paris attack victims, yesterday. With both clubs having the same red-and-white colours and a number of kit combinations clashing, Hamilton took advantage of the need for a different solution to show “sympathy and solidarity with the people of France” by wearing an all-white French away strip.

VW sponsorship: Bundesliga soccer clubs Hannover 96, Werder Bremen and Schalke 04 as well as second division 1860 Munich are on the list of sponsorships Volkswagen AG is considering dropping to cut costs amid its emissions scandal, German weekly Bild am Sonntag reported. Volkswagen, Europe’s largest carmaker, is battling the biggest business crisis in its 78-year history after admitting in September it installed software in diesel vehicles to deceive U.S. regulators about the true level of their toxic emissions.

Zurich: Gilles Yapi scored from near the halfway line to set FC Zurich on their way to a 5-3 win over Lugano and give Sami Hyypia his first win as their coach yesterday. Lugano goalkeeper Alex Valentini rushed out of his area to make a clearance but sent the ball to Yapi in the middle of the field. The Ivorian sent a pinpoint shot straight into the net from just inside the Lugano half with the goalkeeper caught out of his ground.
