A 22-year-old pregnant woman killed in a stabbing attack during which her baby is believed to have been cut from her womb alive has been identified by police in New York City.

Angelique Sutton, who was nearly nine months pregnant, was found in a pool of blood on Friday afternoon in the Wakefield section of the Bronx. The baby survived the incident.

Police believe Ms Sutton's baby was cut from her womb by a 22-year-old childhood friend.

The suspect was taken into custody at the scene, screaming that the baby was hers. But police say an investigation showed the newborn child belonged to Sutton.
The suspect was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation and is expected to be charged.

Her boyfriend was questioned, but later released.
Ms Sutton was pronounced dead at hospital.
