A drunk Welshman who last Friday punched a plain clothes police officer in Paceville thinking he had stolen his car was today was given a one-year jail term suspended for four years and slapped with an €800 fine.

Liam Anthony Griffiths, 32, was arraigned under arrest by inspector Elton Taliana before Magistrate Gabriella Vella. The man, who admitted all charges brought against him, also paid €200 for damaging one of the car’s side mirrors.

The court heard how the accused had approached the police officer, requesting him the keys of the vehicle next to him, thinking it was his. However, as soon as the officer revealed his identity and presented his tag, the Welshman punched him in the face causing slight injuries.
