What led you to take up the role of volunteer during CHOGM once again?

Carlo Scicluna: I applied for a volunteer as the last time I participated in 2005, it was a very satisfactory and memorable experience. I especially appreciated the fact that I met a lot of people from different cultures.

Svetlana Rose Curmi: During CHOGM 2005 I served as an information officer. I was lucky enough then not to be based solely at the press centre but was also given the opportunity to accompany the international press to the various venues where the meetings were being held.

Even though it was very demanding to liaise with journalists from all over the world and each having their own agenda, their diverse culture and work ethics made my participation in CHOGM 2005 an enriching and very positive experience.

Indeed, whereas 10 years ago I was expected to contribute towards CHOGM 2005 given that the department I worked in at the time was responsible for all press arrangements, this time I spontaneously decided to apply to serve as a volunteer.

What strikes you most about such an experience and what are your expectations for CHOGM Malta 2015?

Carlo Scicluna: The organisation is exceptional and the fact that all those involved are working to strengthen Malta’s good reputation is commendable. I expect that everything will be well organised and I will be proud to be part of it.

Svetlana Rose Curmi: Such events offer a rare opportunity to meet and assist foreign dignitaries and officials. What I find very interesting is that working in close proximity to such high-level functionaries means that we are all representing our country.

Drawing on my experience during CHOGM 2005, I believe that CHOGM 2015 will be another vibrant event based on teamwork and synergy. Imparting a good impression of Malta is a responsibility which I look forward to with enthusiasm.

How do you think that such an experience will benefit you personally?

Carlo Scicluna: This is a once in a lifetime opportunity which I’m lucky to be experiencing twice. Every day presents you with different experiences and this helps me mature.

Svetlana Rose Curmi: Similarly to CHOGM 2005, this event will pose a big challenge that offers an enriching and unforgettable experience. The serious commitment and keen dedication will definitely make this a formative experience for me. I’m proud to serve my country once again at such a high profile international event and I’m looking forward to contributing towards making CHOGM 2015 a success.
