The opening ceremony is one of the most anticipated events during CHOGM Malta 2015. The show will include drama, dance, music, 3D animations and projections over an approximate 40-metre wide screen. The performance is expected to emotionally engage the viewer while reflecting on the commonalities of all Commonwealth nations and ultimately highlight the overarching CHOGM theme: Adding Global Value.

In order to showcase a thrilling national and international perspective, over 360 performers have been engaged to be part of this event including children, singers, musicians, dancers, acrobats, designers, craftsmen, and two aerialists from the UK. Filmographers, 3D animators, artisans and choreographers have also been key in the creation of this show.

Through a joint collaboration, Ivan Grech, Mro. Karl Fiorini and Mro. Mario Sammut have composed music for this occasion. An original piece will also be performed by guitarist Simon Schembri to accompany a unique performance by Żfin Malta. Members of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra have also collaborated.

In addition, the opening ceremony will include a performance by tenor Joseph Calleja, accompanied by Alison Ellul’s children’s choir, while tenor Nico Darmanin will perform during the repeat performances. Other singers will include Matthew James Borg, Errol Sammut, Amber and Jasmine, as well as the Animae choir.

The creative team behind this production includes Ray Calleja as artistic director, Alison White as head choreographer, Justin Brincat as make-up designer and artist, and Marygrace Pisani as costume designer. The costumes are being produced at Corradino Correctional Facility in collaboration with the Love Faith Forgiveness Project while some costumes were designed by MCAST students as part of their educational curriculum under the guidance of tutor Sef Farrugia.

The production of these designs and their performance was entrusted to Masquerade Malta while the costume production went to Louie Noir. Ingrid Desira Buttigieg, Douglas Comely, Dorian Mallia, Felix Busuttil, Mavin Khoo, Serenity Performers and MalteseMotion were also engaged to choreograph different parts of the performance. MCAST students and their tutors were also engaged and will be responsible for all the dynamic hairstyles required for the performance.

Taking place on November 27 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, the ceremony will also be transmitted globally via www.chogm2015.mt/. Extra live performances in Malta will be open to the public on November 27 and 28 against a €15 entrance fee with proceeds going towards the Malta Community Chest Fund. Tickets available from the MCC booking office.
