We are constantly being inundated with propaganda about a ‘government that listens’.

However, take for instance the Żonqor Point saga or the splitting of Mepa. The government listened to Marlene Farrugia’s brilliant arguments on these issues but the decision had already been taken.

The same applies to the sale of citizenship. The government listened and carried out a few minor changes but still does not want to release the names of these new Maltese citizens, who, some would argue, could threaten our security.

The government listens to the Opposition about the need to combat corruption, to have a decent traffic management system in place and a strong police presence in Paceville but nevertheless ignores its recommendations.

In fact, the government’s failure to listen has led to the resignation from the Labour parliamentary group of Farrugia, who is without doubt one of the most competent and pro-environment MPs.

Farrugia, stressing the importance of allowing the people’s voice to be heard throughout the whole legislature – not just at elections – said the Labour Party had missed an opportunity to make a quality leap in governance.

She added: “I will represent the many people who voted for the Labour movement wanting transparent, honest and dignified governance.” I would like to add that the Opposition Nationalist Party provides a shield against all the current political malaise and gives space to all those who believe in a clean and transparent administration this country and its people deserve.
