Guangzhou win: Brazilian forward Elkeson scored a stunning solo effort as China’s Guangzhou Evergrande edged Emiratis Al-Ahli 1-0 yesterday to win their second Asian Champions League title in three years. Guangzhou will now represent Asia at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan next month after coach Luiz Felipe Scolari extended his unbeaten run to 23 matches since taking charge in June.

Souness: Former Liverpool manager Graeme Souness was taken into hospital on Friday. The 62-year-old, who also played with distinction for the Reds, is receiving treatment in a hospital in Bournemouth, close to his home in Poole, Dorset. The former midfielder won 54 caps for Scotland during a playing career which also saw him win five league titles and three European Cups among his Liverpool honours and a Coppa Italia title with Sampdoria.

Verona: Brazilian midfielder Francelino Matuzalem added to Verona’s injury woes yesterday after sustaining a thigh strain in his left leg. Reports said Matuzalem will skip today’s midday match against Napoli and needs at least two more weeks to recover from the injury. Verona were hoping to have veteran Luca Toni available this weekend after two months out of action.

Derby off: The top-of-the-table Athens derby clash between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos was called off before kick-off yesterday following violent scenes in and around the stadium with flares being thrown on to the pitch. Scuffles between riot police and fans outside the ground made for a hostile atmosphere inside and, after a thrown flare exploded at the feet of striker Alfred Finnbogason, he and his Olympiakos’ team-mates retreated to the dressing rooms.

Gomez: Atalanta are ready to offer Alejandro Gomez, 27, a new contract as they want the Argentine to stay in Bergamo following reports that Milan were ready to make an offer for the winger in January. Tuttomercatoweb said Atalanta are not ready to discuss any transfer deals for Gomez, formerly of Catania and Metalist, and this week they intend to meet his agent to discuss a contract extension until 2018.
