A Vienna prosecutor has turned down a request for criminal action to be taken against Markus Kaushofer, the former CEO of Malta International Airport.

The Vienna Airport, the biggest shareholder in MIA, had alleged Mr Kaushofer had curried favour and obtained unfair advantage through the purchase of a watch from an airport retailer.

He was subsequently dismissed from MIA. However, the prosecutor yesterday ruled that, in its opinion, there was no wrongdoing on Mr Kaushofer’s part.

A second request by Vienna Airport for the Austrian courts to institute criminal proceedings was also rejected.

Vienna Airport is currently facing a lawsuit in New York alleging that it orchestrated a smear campaign to destroy the reputation of one of its key partners.
