Alex Borg and Brian Cini are through to the quarter-finals of the IBSF World Championships in Hurghada, Egypt.

Borg showed great resilience to see of Iranian player Soheil Vahedi 5-4 and set up a last eight clash against Pankaj Advani, of India.

The Malta champion was joined by Cini in the next round after the latter beat Tomasz Skalski 5-3.

The Maltese youngster, who compiled runs of 53, 57 and 62, will today face Chinese player Zhao Xintong for a place in the semi-finals.

Earlier yesterday, both Borg and Cini put solid displays to reach the Last 16.

Borg broke the early resistance of home player Yaser Elsherbiny, winning the last three frames to seal a 5-2 victory.

Cini looked to be cruising against China’s Yuan Sijun when surging into a 3-0 lead.

But the 15-year-old Chinese player launched a stirring fightback to win the next three frames and level the match. Cini refused to panic as he won the next two frames and claim a 5-3 victory.

In the masters competition, Jason Peplow and Simon Zammit experienced mixed fortunes in the Last 16 stage.

Peplow needed all his experience to edge home player Alok Kumar 4-3. Today he plays another Indian player, Rafath Habib, for a place in the semi-finals.

On the other hand, Zammit’s run in the competition came to an end after going down to Belgium’s Alain Vandersteen 4-1.
