The Nationalist Party has called for an explanation as to how a mistake was made in the charge sheet of a man who was accused of drug trafficking. Although the man had pleaded guilty to the charges, he was yesterday allowed to walk free by the Court of Appeal thanks to the mistake.

The PN also asked whether the prime minister would use the same yardstick he used in 2012 when an issue was raised over a similar mistake when Dr Muscat even called for the resignation of the then Minister of Home Affairs.

"Will Dr Muscat now use the same yardstick, or is this a case where what applies to others does not apply to him?" the PN asked.

The PN said it would not sink to such levels, but it expected an explanation as to how this mistake was done, especially as it would further erode the people's confidence in the police force.

Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela yesterday asked the Police Board to investigate what had happened.
