The Speaker was this evening asked to investigate 'verbal threats' made in the chamber against former Labour MP Marlene Farrugia.

The call was made after a commotion at the end of a debate on a bill to set up the Environment Committee.

Nationalist MP Marthese Portelli was speaking when a commotion was heard in the background.

Mr Agius told the Speaker that Labour MP Joe Debono Grech had told Dr Farrugia nigi ghalik u nifqak (I will come to beat you up).

The Speaker said he would investigate.

In a tweet Dr Farrugia said "Back to the 70's and early 80's! Ghadni kemm gejt mhedda fil -parlament minn deputat Laburista, fejn rah u semghu kulhadd." - Back to the 70s and 80s - I have just been threatened in parliament by a Labour MP where he could be seen and heard by everyone.
