A Bill to enable Transport Malta to regulate railways and railway rolling stock was approved by parliament this afternoon.

Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said this Bill was needed because the definition of railways had been deleted from the law in the past and it needed to be re-introduced so that EU directives on transport could be fully transposed into Maltese law.

He said that despite the transposition, clauses relating to railways would not be applicable for as long as Malta did not have railways.

Nationalist MPs Marthese Portelli and Censu Galea asked whether the government was considering some sort of railway or monorail or if any studies had been made.

Replying, Mr Mizzi said the government was considering all options to improve transport, including trains and underground systems and would take decisions on the basis of viability.

He explained, however, that this legislation would make it possible for overseas companies to set up shop in Malta and operate railways abroad.
