The first matches from the second round of the GFA Division Two championship were played last weekend with the top three teams chalking up narrow wins at the expense of opponents from the lower half of the standings.

Leaders Xagħra United made it six wins from seven matches after scraping past Għarb Rangers 1-0.

Play was balanced for most of the match but the Blues secured victory thanks to Luke Attard who struck the decisive goal midway into the second half.

Nadur Youngsters, two points behind Xagħra in second place, were made to sweat to lower the colours of Munxar Falcons in a five-goal thriller.

The Youngsters opened the scoring after 27 minutes through Brandon Said who also had two attempts stopped by the woodwork.

Munxar, however, came back strongly after the break and Anthony Attard scored a double on 52 and 69 minutes to put them 2-1 ahead.

Nadur were stunned but regrouped in time to sneak the three points in the dying stages.

Three minutes from time, Munxar’s Marvin Grech committed an own goal and, in stoppage time, Saviour Attard converted a penalty to hand Nadur a 3-2 victory.

Meanwhile, third-placed Sannat Lions stayed in the promotion hunt after a narrow win over Żebbuġ Rovers.

Mark Muscat got the only goal of the encounter from a penalty four minutes from half-time.

The Lions had Daniel Borg sent off on 78 minutes but held on to defend their slim lead and seal their fourth win of the season.
