The 2015 Nestlè Fitness Malta International Challenge Marathon gets under way this afternoon when the participants gather outside Mdina Gate for the start of the opening leg at 1pm.

Over 225 runners are expected to take part in this annual three-day race, now in its 25th edition.

At the launch of the event earlier this month, race director Barry Whitmore said that 200 runners have entered this year’s Challenge Marathon while the remaining 25 will be racing in the team relay competition.

Today’s leg, over a distance of 11.1km, takes participants from Mdina Gate towards Dingli and on to Rabat.

Birżebbuġa hosts the second leg tomorrow with the runners taking in a short 6km run starting at St George’s Bay and ending in front of the town’s parish church.

The Challenge Marathon comes to a close on Sunday with a 25km run, starting near the Wignacourt Tower in St Paul’s Bay and finishing at Freedom Square in Valletta.
