The Maltese Diabetes Association is a voluntary non-governmental organisation aimed at educating its circa 1,000 members and the public on diabetes and how to prevent complications arising from it.

The association is a member of the International Diabetes Federation (www.idf.org) and registered with the Commissioner of Voluntary Organisations in Malta (VO/0704)

Its mission is to improve the lives of people with diabetes and to work towards a future with fewer complications and generate more awareness on this condition.

The association offers a range of services, including educational talks for persons suffering from Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes; a family support group; a juvenile diabetes support group named Daisy; weekend live-ins for teenage members; and an annual summer camp for juvenile and teenage members.

An in-house magazine and newsletter Id-Diabete w Saħħtek is distributed to all members, hospitals, private clinics and leading pharmacies.

It includes various informative articles, recipes, professional advise and regular updates from IDF.

Take the first test for free

If one has any of the following symptoms, one should contact a doctor:

• Going to the toilet a lot, especially at night

• Being really thirsty

• Feeling more tired than usual

• Losing weight without trying to

• Genital itching or thrush

• Cuts and wounds take longer to heal

• Blurred vision

It does not necessarily mean one has diabetes, but it’s worth checking – early diagnosis, treatment and good control are vital for good health and reduce the chances of developing serious complications.

The free blood glucose monitoring initiative, organised by the Maltese Diabetes Association in collaboration with the Diabetes & Endocrine Centre at Mater Dei Hospital, provides opportunity to take the first step and get tested for free.

The association is holding two events:

• Today at The Plaza Shopping Centre in Sliema.

• Saturday, November 21, at The Main Street Shopping Complex in Paola.

Both events run from 10am to 1pm.
