I was interested to read Frank Rizzo’s letter about the food waste bag but I would like to make one or two observations regarding food waste collection, which has been in place for two or three years in England.

While we do not have such high temperatures in Englandit can get very warm duringthe summer.

The local council provides every household with a special bin, not very large, which has a simple locking mechanism and no vents so that rats and other creatures cannot get in.

These bins will hold around 20 litres of waste in special bio-degradable bags which canbe obtained free of chargefrom the local council or bought from supermarkets.

They are not expensive to buy, roughly around 10c each.

Of course, they get very smelly, even in winter, but it is not a problem because of the small bins which effectively lockthem away.

Food waste is collected once a week, not twice as here.

Here in Kalkara we are not involved in any trials and so I am not familiar with the procedure, but Rizzo’s understandable concerns do not arise in the UK.
