Għajnsielem beat bottom-placed St Lawrence Spurs 1-0 last weekend to remain the only team without defeat in the top flight as they completed their first-round calendar at the top of the table.

The Blacks enjoyed territorial supremacy for most of the 90 minutes but were unable to add to Joseph Vella’s opener on 33 minutes.

Vella scored from a penalty after he was floored in the box by Louis Buttigieg.

Before putting his team ahead, Vella had a ‘goal’ disallowed for offside and suffered the same fate on 85 minutes.

Victoria Hotspurs moved into third place on 12 points following a 2-0 win over Oratory Youths.

This was a direct clash between two teams aiming to fill third place behind front-runners Għajnsielem and Xewkija Tigers in the table.

Play was quite balanced during the first period but the Hotspurs increased their attacks after the break and it came as no surprise when Miguel Montano fired the Citizens ahead with a fine strike on 53 minutes.

On the hour mark, Oratory suffered another blow when they were reduced to 10 players after Keith Borg was sent off for pulling down Mark Camilleri inside the box.

However, Montano’s shot from the spot was stopped by Oratory goalkeeper Mark Grima.

Minutes later Oratory newcomer Vinny Kalanda Mukendi had a header going just wide but at the other end, Colombian Montano sealed victory with a goal in stoppage time.

In the other match of the weekend, Kerċem Ajax returned to winning ways after beating SK Victoria Wanderers 1-0.

Nigerian striker Anthony Ewurum, who was making his debut for the Wanderers, almost broke the deadlock on 14 minutes but his attempt was stopped by the post.

Kerċem scored the only goal of the encounter on 30 minutes when Claudio Antunes hit an unstoppable shot past the keeper.

Victoria were unable to bounce back and Kerċem went close to doubling their lead on two occasions but efforts by Elton Vella and Ian Xuereb came off the crossbar.

The Wanderers had Mark Buhagiar sent off three minutes from time for hitting Vella who was grounded.

Division Two

Nadur Youngsters consolidated runners-up position in the table, two points behind leaders Xagħra United, after a 2-1 win over Żebbuġ Rovers.

Nadur stormed into a two-goal lead through Elijah Xuereb (11) and substitute Brandon Said (68).

Rovers pulled one back through Frank Attard (82) but Nadur preserved their advantage to finish the first round on a positive note.

In another match, Għarb Rangers had the better of Sannat Lions 3-1 for their second win in the championship.

Sannat would have edged closer to the top two with a win but Għarb opened a three-goal lead through Chris Attard (19, 39) and Sylvan Galea (58).

The Lions scored their consolation goal through Daniel Borg 10 minutes from time.
