Mosta have increased their pool of Nigerian players with the signing of former Nigeria midfielder Onyekachi Donatus Okonkwo, the BOV Premier League club announced yesterday.

The Blues have a host of Nigerian players in their squad after tying up a partnership agreement with an agency fronted by Tijani Babangida last summer.

The 33-year-old Okonkwo, who is also known as Tico, won the Swiss championship during his three-year spell with FC Zurich between 2007 and 2010 and also played for Al Kharaitiyat in Qatar.

Okonkwo, who was on the books of South African club Mpumalanga Black Aces last season, could make his debut for Mosta in their next league match, against Floriana on November 22, if his international transfer certificate arrives on time.

Ivan Zammit, the Mosta coach, will be hoping that the signing of the experienced Okonkwo strengthens his midfield as the Blues are striving to build on their positive start to the season.

They are seventh in the Premier League with 18 points from 11 games, five behind leaders Balzan.
