Vin Diesel is Kaulder, a witch hunter who was cursed with eternal life in the Middle Ages when he managed to defeat the Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht) who was planning to unleash a deadly plague to wipe out humanity.

Years later, Kaulder becomes a soldier of the Catholic Church and continues to hunt witches. The Church has always given him a handler, that is a contact point to provide him with the help and guidance he needs.

Dolan (Michael Caine), who was his 36th handler, is now nearing his retirement age and needs to hand Kaulder over to another Dolan.

Dolan the 37th (Elijah Wood) needs to learn the ropes quickly as Dolan the 36th soon ends up dead. Kaulder believes his death was brought about by the witches. While attempting to track down the one responsible, Kaulder manages to allyhimself with Chloe (Rose Leslie), a benign witch and a dream walker.

The film brings plenty of swagger with a goofy, clumsy and endearing attitude

Following the death of Chloe’s friend by Belial (Olafur Darri Olafsson), a witch who is on a quest to resurrect the Witch Queen, Kaulder and Chloe set out to kill him.

The Last Witch Hunter is an enjoyable action fantasy movie that flaunts a grade A cast. I was surprised to see a film that is not based on some young adult fantasy book or a graphic novel given that the market has been inundated with them.

The Last Witch Hunter is rumoured to be actually based on Vin Diesel’s Dungeons and Dragons role-playing character and this is very muchevident in the way the film is structured.

The actor is at the centre of the movie and brings enough tough guy screen presence to be likeable. His character could have been given a bit more background instead of just featuring him simply wielding a sword and chasing witches.

Caine seems to enjoy his role while Wood is delightful as he returns in Lord of The Rings mode. On the other hand, Leslie brings a pale beauty to the screen, contrasting with Diesel’s physical presence.

The script shows that the film does not take itself too seriously but simply enjoys exploiting a fantasy world.

Overall, the film knows its audience members and knows that they should already have a vast spectrum of information about the fantasy and supernatural settings.

The Last Witch Hunter brings plenty of swagger with a goofy, clumsy and endearing attitude that genre fans will enjoy.
