The LGTBIQ consultative council called on the Valletta Summit on Migration to respect the rights of all migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, and advocate for the introduction of safe and legal routes for those seeking protection.

It said in a statement this should be done with dignified reception modalities and access to fair, sensitive and thorough procedures to determine eligibility for refugee protection, wherever and whenever sought.

The council said that while it recognised the challenges such a movement of people placed on governments and communities, however it also recognised the opportunities of migration to countries and region.

“The protection of fundamental human rights and respect towards the diversity of the peoples of Europe are found at the heart of our European identity particularly when faced with complex and challenging developments.

“This is clearly enshrined in the European Convention of Human Rights, EU Treaties and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights that address and affirm the rights, but also the responsibilities and duties of States to preserve and protect the human rights of every person and community.

“We express our solidarity with all migrants and refugees, and call upon all governments to place the lives of people at the centre of their discussions and decisions.

“Migrants and refugees are not a burden to our region, countries and communities; they are human beings deserving respect, equal rights and solidarity, towards whom we all carry an obligation. We are all called to ensure that their fundamental human rights and freedoms are respected at all times,” the council said.
