Cynergi Virtus and Caffe Moak Luxol retained the St James Hospital Shield trophy for another season after contrasting victories in yesterday’s finals at the Ta’ Qali pavilion.

Virtus struggled to assert control in the men’s final as Floriana led for much of the match, surging into a 13-point lead late in the third session, 46-33.

But two three-pointers from Jacob Formosa kickstarted Virtus’s fightback as they managed to wipe out the deficit with only six minutes to the final buzzer.

Floriana were rattled and Virtus continued to increase their advantage to ease to a 71-62 victory.

The women’s final was dominated by Luxol who were on top for much of the match, opening a 16-point lead at the interval, 32-16.

On the restart, Depiro tried to fight back but Luxol were too strong as they strolled to a comfortable 62-38 victory.

For Luxol this was their eighth success in their history.
