Proponents of a Malta-Gozo tunnel seem to be deriving encouragement from the fact that Norway has constructed some 40 underwater tunnels, which are well maintained, and more are being planned.
There is no doubt that Norway has built up considerable expertise in underwater tunnelling but this is not necessarily sufficient reason for us to follow suit.
Norway is a major oil producer and also has an abundance of fish in its waters. Its combined exports of oil and fish amount to around €8.25 billion each year.
It did not feel the need to join the European Union but its people are the richest in Europe after Luxembourg, and Norway’s sovereign-wealth fund is the biggest in the world at an impressive €800 billion.
Malta’s situation is, shall we say, different, and we should consider very carefully whether it is appropriate for us to do what Norway does.
