Most contractors do not care much about aesthetics during the construction phase, and they uglify the surroundings if this saves them a few hundred euros – and this for a project worth millions.

The picture shows scrap wood used by a building contractor as hoarding on a building site in the middle of the Sliema shopping centre (near Villa Drago). There seems to be no authority thatregulates this matter. When a construction projects starts, we normally expect makeshift hoardings, tattered pieces of green cloth, scrap wood used as doors, bricks or stone used as no-parking signs, etc.

As a result many otherwise beautiful and elegant zones in Malta and Gozo look shabby, dingy and drab.
