Several thousand migrants and refugees waited at the border between Slovenia and Austria this morning, after many of them were forced to spend the night either in heated tents or in the open air.

According to Austrian police, around 4,200 people were at the border area in the morning, and a train carrying at least 1,000 more people arrived later on.

Some people could be seen huddling beside camp fires and a cloud of smoke engulfed the area.

Migrants were held in an area behind fences on the Slovenian side near Sentilj, before being directed over the Austrian border by police and the army.

Crowds grew larger on the Slovenia-Austria border, after Slovenian authorities started taking people there directly from the border with Croatia by train to speed up the process of channelling the huge flow of migrants through the region.
