The debate on TimesTalk whether Malta should have a tunnel linking it to Gozo drew lively exchanges yesterday.

Geologist Peter Gatt repeatedly cautioned against Malta going into the project blindly, noting the presence of faults in the channel and scant knowledge of its rock formations. He also observed that Malta does not even have a National Geological Service.

Michael Grech, president of the Gozo Business Chamber, highlighted the feasibility of the project following a report in which the Chamber was involved. He said the project was key for Gozo's development and any geological problems could be identified in a geological survey for which the government has allocated funds.

Environmentalist Alan Deidun raised a number of issues, including the risk of creating traffic congestion in Gozo. He also asked how the material excavated from the tunnel would be disposed of.
