The nurses’ union is this evening holding a meeting for its members who work at the Gozo General Hospital to explain the conditions of work in relation to the proposed project.

Meetings are currently underway between hospital CEO Nadine Delicata and doctors and a meeting was held this morning between the Malta Union of Midwives’ and Nurses, Health Minister Konrad Mizzi and Vitalis Global Healthcare, the preferred bidder to redevelop the St Luke’s and Gozo hospitals.

The company is expected to make a €200 million investment and will develop and run the two hospitals on a 30-year concession, providing a mix of private beds and others contracted to the government.

In Gozo, Vitalis is expected to build a state-of-the-art acute general hospital with 150 private beds and 125 contracted to the State health service.

The Gozo hospital will have an additional 175 long-term beds for use by the public health service for rehabilitation, geriatric and psychiatric services.

It will also build the medical school and campus to be used by Barts Medical School, a faculty of the Queen Mary University of London.
