Well done for the splendid editorial on the plight of pensioners (October 20).

At last one hears the voice of sanity speaking the truth to those in power.

This country has been living – and is still living – under an illusion where pensioners are concerned. It is time for the two-thirds system to be exposed for what it is – an unpalatable farce.

Moreover, the artificially low Maximum Pensionable Income (MPI), i.e. the ceiling under which the maximum two-thirds pension is established, simply adds salt to the wound.

In effect, what we have is an MPI established in 1981 plus COLA increases (i.e. inflation at minimum wage level) since 2004.

This is a far cry from the present day wage realities.
