Legendary singer David Bowie will release his new album on his 69th birthday in January, a spokesman has confirmed.

Entitled Blackstar, the album will also feature a single of the same name.

A statement from Bowie’s publicist today stated that contrary to “inaccurate reporting on the sound and content of the album” which claimed that “Blackstar may be the oddest work yet” from the pioneer, only the following can be confirmed: the single will be released on November 20, and it will not be part of Bowie’s theatre piece Lazarus, and that the album will be released on Bowie’s birthday, 8 January 2016. No further details can be confirmed at this stage."

Bowie has written the title track for Sky Atlantic’s new John Hurt and Samantha Morton drama The Last Panthers – his first original music for a film or TV show for 20 years.

Bowie's last full studio album - the first in 10 years - was 2013's The Next Day, which reached number one.

The elusive British singer who penned songs like Space Oddity, Heroes and Where are we Now? (see below) is considered one of the world's biggest musical icons.
