The Students’ Philosophical Society and Philosophy Postgraduate Reading Group is holding a series of meetings to read from, discuss and examine the preface to A.V. Miller’s version of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s work, Phenomenology of Spirit.

Each session will deal with specific paragraphs from the preface, and will be led by individuals whose background and expertise is most relevant to the paragraphs.

Students with no background in philosophy are welcome, and contributions will be encouraged from all academic fields and disciplines.

The first session will be held tomorrow from 6 to 8pm and subsequent sessions will be held every other Monday.

The sessions will be held in Gateway Building, room 264.

Doors, semiotics of space

‘The door as starting point: on semiotics of space’ is a public lecture to be held on Thursday from 5 to 7pm in Chemistry Building, Room 327, by the Department of Gender Studies of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

The talk is a short passage through doors in architecture, literature and film. Doors are more than simple mechanisms that define the borders of public and private space, and provide safety protection and thermal isolation. There are also visible doors that lead nowhere and hidden doors that might unlock access to freedom.

The speaker is Dalila Honorato from Ionian University, Corfu, where she teaches courses on media aesthetics and semiotics. She is a founding member of the Interactive Arts Lab, and her research focuses on embodiment in the intersection of performing arts and new media.
