At least four people were injured when a bull leapt over barriers in a Peruvian bullring and ran amok among spectators on Sunday.

The bull had entered a bullring during the closing of a traditional feast to celebrate the patron saint of Taraco, in the province of Huancane, Puno, located 1,540 kms to the southeast of Lima.

Video footage showed the bull landing in the stands among the spectators after jumping high enough to clear barriers around the ring.

Spectators were seen provoking the bull by throwing objects and beer at him before the incident.

After the jump, the spectators panicked and started pushing and jumping back into the bullring to avoid the bull. Others climbed up posts and waited until the bull had been controlled.

None of the bullfighters present at the event had wanted to fight the bull due to its wild nature. According the report published by El Comercio, the bull jumped into the stands just as its owners tried to tie a rope around his neck.

The event is being investigated by district authorities due to the lack of security at the event.
