I sympathise with Louise Bonett when she described St Paul’s Bay as “the town that buses forget” (October 13).

Mosta, with nearly 20,000 residents, is in the same boat ifnot worse.

Since the terminus was removed from Rotunda Square we have had to bear buses passing through Mosta full to capacity most of the time.

With the arrival of Autobuses de Lyon the situation is nowbeyond description.

As Bonett said, buses passing through St Paul’s Bay start their journey in Ċirkewwa and by the time they reach Mosta they just drive past leaving angry commuters still waiting, rain or shine. Even bus shelters are scarce.

People get to work late, patients miss their hospital appointments, students their lectures, travellers their flights.

And that’s not to mention the exhaust people have to inhale.

This is reality and certainly not a perception and it is messing up people’s lives. It has to be tackled immediately.

One must not forget that the present administration gives the company three times the subsidy Arriva used to receive to provide a good service.

It might alleviate the long queues in Mosta and elsewhere for empty buses to leave the terminus every 30 minutes, especially in peak hours.

On a similar note, Bonett’s suggestion that Bus X3 passes through St Paul’s Bay makes sense. If this suggestion is given a try and the same bus goes through the centre of Mosta, it will save commuters heading to the south the hassle of catching two buses.

This should also save time and help reduce traffic on the roads.

The Maltese people have a right to an efficient public transport and the administration is in duty bound to provide it.

This even more so when Autobuses de Lyon are receiving a €30 million subsidy.
