I went to Tanzania on a missionary experience and there I came across an oasis that left me filled with awe. This was no ordinary oasis where one normally finds water, vegetation and shade, but a medical facility called Makiungu Hospital.

A congregation of nuns called the Medical Missionaries of Mary run the hospital. Sister Maria Borda (a Maltese nun) and Sister Cornelia Udoka manage this hospital like clockwork despite the lack of funds and modern equipment.

There is another congregation of nuns called The Holy Spirit Sisters, who also contribute to the running of the hospital. Sister Martina Wanda, who assists in the administration department and is responsible for the maintenance, transport, purchasing and various other activities, has a full day. Every morning, many people from distant villages flow into the oasis to avail themselves of its bounty from the early hours of the day.

The doctors and nurses, as well as the other employees who work there, contribute fully with love and dedication. The hospital, besides treating the patients’ ailments, also offers words and love of God in abundance and hope for the destitute.

To continue this humanitarian undertaking efficiently, the hospital requires funds. Small efforts are needed to cure ailments which may lead to permanent disabilities if not tended to in time. Sometimes they can even lead to death.
