The comments policy for Malta's biggest online news forum is being updated from today.

Timesofmalta.com will continue providing a platform for users to stimulate discussion and diverse opinions on the stories uploaded. But in an attempt to open the debate to a wider audience, we plan to be more incisive in our moderation.

We want this forum to be a relevant, respectful and non-offensive place to stimulate discussion

Wherever possible, we will encourage authors to engage with readers online, word count will be limited on most posts, while comments on certain delicate stories will be disabled. No form of discriminatory or hate speech will be tolerated.

"Our comments sections have helped us to connect with our readers. They have turned what was once a one-way street into a multi-level conversation and helped us source several stories. But we also want this forum to be a relevant, respectful and non-offensive place to stimulate discussion," Times of Malta digital media editor Herman Grech said.

More than 20,000 comments a month are posted on Malta's biggest news website.
