Sliema Stompers 3
Swieqi Overseas 28

Swieqi Overseas started the new rugby season on a sound footing last week after beating Sliema Stompers in front of a bumper crowd to lift the Ray Elliott Cup at the Marsa ground.

Despite the ever-present threat of the speedy Stompers backs, Overseas were the better side all round and took control early on, showing their prowess in the set scrums.

Both sides tried to produce their best play on the day but it was clear that the long lay-off in the off-season had affected their rhythm with most of the players looking rusty at this early stage of the new campaign.

Overseas opened the scoring with a penalty by Duchange, replied to by an equaliser by McLister for Stompers.

Vince Stivala and Schembri then scored tries for Overseas to stretch the lead.

It was all Overseas in the second half as Duchange was successful from another penalty followed by a Cassar try and a pushover rounded off the score at 28-3.
