Vittoriosa residents are calling for the rejection of a planning application for a kiosk, sanitary facilities and tables and chairs in the area known as Fuq is-Simenta in Triq La Vallette.

The application for a full development permit was refused in June but theapplicant filed an appeal to be heard by the environment and planning review tribunal. The tribunal’s next sitting is on October 20. About 350 residents havepetitioned Mepa and the local council against the granting of a permit, arguing that the development would cause noise and unpleasant smells, obstruct the views and take away a recreation area.

Earlier this year, the residents unsuccessfully tried to obtain a court injunction to stop Mepa from issuing a permit.

The residents’ opposition led the local council to reverse its “no objection” stand. It argued that it had been misled by the applicant who claimed the residents had been consulted and were enthusiastic about the project.

The Vittoriosa Historical Society, the Three Cities Foundation, Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar and Din l-Art Ħelwa have also opposed the project.

The Cottonera Rehabilitation Committee failed to take a position on the matter although it discussed the application. The applicant is claiming that the prin-ciple of a kiosk in the area had been established in 2008, following the approval of outline application.

Mepa’s Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee had no problem with the proposed location of the kiosk and the placing of tables and chairs, but objected to the proposed design.
