Are our politicians above the law? In theory they’re not, but what about in practice?

Misgivings have been expressed by a senior ex-European Court of Human Rights judge about the way our politicians in government appoint judges, suggesting there might be the danger of these judges perhaps occasionally functioning as politicians’ poodles in important judgments.

The Ombudsman has also expressed concern about the possibility of politicians in government acting as if they were a law unto themselves.

Released from the restraints of colonial rule, our politicians quickly ‘stole’ a bank from its shareholders and have ‘stolen’ part of the social security pension of several thousand senior citizens consistently for over 30 years.

Are we a successful democratic economy or are we a southern European maverick parliamentary dictatorship? Time will tell.
