Villa MelziVilla Melzi

My boyfriend and I recently spent four days in the picturesque village of Bellagio, which lies on the banks of Lake Como. The whole area is spectacular – there are mountains in the distance, beautiful villas, exquisite restaurants right by the lake and they make the best hot chocolate I have ever tasted.

One of the highlights from my stay, however, was our visit toe Villa Melzi and its huge gardens, which are open to the public. The building and its surrounding grounds have been transformed into a museum – there are several artistic artefacts to admire inside, but I enjoyed the botanical gardens most. These are perfectly landscaped, each plant, shrub and tree explained; the various pathways make it fun to explore and we ended up spending about three hours just relaxing in the sun (we were lucky to have good weather). The gardens follow an English layout and the owner had actually enlisted the services of an architect and a botanist in order to achieve the best effect. Besides the greenery, one can also admire the sculptures – before you leave, make sure you stop at the belvedere and get your photo taken there! The scenery in the background is a feast for the senses, with the colourful flowers contrasting with the blue sky and the grey waters.

I give this attraction full marks in terms of money spent and enjoyment. I would just suggest that in case of bad weather your visit should be postponed. Most of the beauty lies outdoors and it would be a shame to have to rush through your visit because of the cold.
